Ever since his early childhood, Georges Maroun has felt
a real passion for photography. He was only 11 years old
when he got his first Canon camera as a birthday present.
This valuable gift had actually marked his life, as he got
profoundly connected with photography techniques. George’s
first snapshots were basically pictures of elderly people
taken in the village where he grew up. He was artistically
attracted to old people’s portraits, as to the particular
facial features and expressions that dramatically show the
weight of a whole life experience.
After settling on photography, as his lifetime career,
Georges enrolled in photography courses, in 1990, in order
to enhance his know-how, by boosting his technical skills
and building up a solid academic knowledge. However, Georges
was sturdily criticized, for having decided on this career
path; photography being unfortunately considered by some
people as a “none-profit profession”. Just upon taking off
on his first academic curriculum, he applied for a
photography program in Italy and opportunely benefited from
a fully-funded scholarship, among other fellow students.
However, due to the socio-political circumstances, related
to the European Union foreign policy at the time, all the
Lebanese students had to regrettably depart back to their
country all the way from Firenze, Italy. This major switch
of plans brought Georges to appreciate being back in his own
country, Lebanon. He then officially embarked on his
professional photography career. That significant
circumstance propelled his self-determination that stoutly
and worthily helped him build up a renowned title and secure
a decent long-term reputation as well.
